Dangers of Tooth Decay and Gum Disease and Foods That May Assist Oral Health

Dangers of tooth decay and gum disease

Tooth decay is literally the decomposition of a person’s tooth. This generally occurs due to a lack of good oral hygiene. Gum disease is caused by bacteria that attack the gum tissue and bone.

Not only does tooth decay and/or gum disease cause discomfort and pain, but, if left untreated, they may lead to much more severe health problems associated with oral infections, such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and premature, low-weight births.

How to prevent tooth decay and gum disease

Both young children and adults are at risk of oral infection if a high level of oral health is not maintained. At home, regular brushing, flossing, and fluoride intake help to prevent oral health issues. Not to go unmentioned are routine visits to the dentist to have a professional dental hygienist clean and examine your mouth. If the dental hygienist sees anything suspicious of a cavity or other problems, the dentist will work further on your mouth with the correct dental procedure.

Interesting foods that may assist oral health

A study, published in the Journal of Natural Products, suggests that licorice root (not licorice vines, the candy) contains two specific components that inhibit some of the main bacteria that are responsible for tooth decay and gum disease. This licorice root is also used as a remedy for other symptoms, such as digestive issues, sore throat, and breath freshener.

As with any supplement, it is crucial to speak with a doctor as supplements may interact negatively with certain health problems and medications.

Foods with calcium, such as cheese and milk, help to strengthen the enamel.

Foods with a high concentration of water, such as fruit and vegetables, help to dilute the sugars contained in food.

Consult a local dental professional to see how to best maintain great oral hygiene.
