WHAT ARE PORCELAIN VENEERS?
Veneers are a natural-looking, contact-lens thin laminates, designed and produced in a lab with great precision, and which go right on top of your existing teeth to help improve esthetics, including the shape, size and shade. A veneer is permanently cemented to the anterior of a tooth in order to achieve a desired look, while simultaneously improving the function of the tooth, as the veneer material (porcelain) is much stronger than natural enamel as is therefore much more resistant to wear and decay.
HOW DO DENTAL VENEERS WORK?
The main purpose of veneers is to improve the cosmetic look. The procedure is minimally invasive and can give you the esthetic look you want with minimal discomfort and in a short amount of time. There are several reasons people opt for dental veneers, but the most common requests are for:
- Chipped and/or fractured teeth from injury
- Size discrepancies between teeth
- Gaps between teeth
- Worn down teeth from excessive grinding
- Tooth stains that can’t be removed or lightened
- Patients that are unhappy with the color or size of their teeth
- Recurrent decay from previous fillings
- Fluorosis that can cause white spots
- Desire to improve one’s appearance
Imagine what having a perfect smile would do to your confidence and self esteem!

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF VENEERS?
There are a few types of veneers depending on your needs and budget.
Porcelain veneers
Porcelain veneers are considered to be the gold standard, and therefore are the more expensive option. This is because the placement of porcelain veneers will require more resources, expertise and time, as compared with composite veneers. At Studio Dental, we use the absolute best cosmetic lab, top of the line equipment, and we employ Master Ceramicists for all veneer design and fabrication. We can design your smile to create a natural look, or if you’re interested in that trademark Hollywood smile, we can create that, too.
Keep in mind that while composite veneers may be the less expensive option to choose, they may need to be repaired or replaced more often, likely resulting in the cost evening out over time.
Composite Veneers
Composite Veneers are similar to porcelain veneers, but they are applied via composite bonding (same as composite fillers) to an existing tooth in order to achieve a better look as well as to improve function. Composite veneers do not last as long as porcelain, nor are they as strong, but they are a less expensive cosmetic option.
A composite veneer is a great, affordable option for a patient who wants to make change to their front teeth. They are less expensive and are done in the same visit, but they do not last as long as porcelain veneers. Some people use them as a stepping stone to a porcelain veneer because of finances. Others prefer composite veneers because the procedure can be less invasive and take less time.
WHAT IS THE PROCESS TO GET VENEERS?
- Getting veneers generally begins when a dentist will gently remove minimal amounts of enamel from the front and sides of your teeth to make room for the veneer.
- A 3-D digital scan will also be used to check the shade of your adjacent teeth and digitally transfer this information to the lab technician to make an exact color match.
- A custom veneer will be fabricated just for you by the finest laboratory. You will be sent home with temporary veneers to wear so no worry about leaving with a beautiful smile.
- Your permanent veneers are fitted and adjusted to your teeth to confirm the proper fit and appearance. Also we match the veneers with your face and look and have you involved on the design if you wish.
- Porcelain veneers are permanently cemented to deliver a lifetime of smiles!
HOW LONG DO VENEERS LAST?
Porcelain veneers are permanent! They are designed to last for many years, and are therefore one of the strongest and most reliable cosmetic procedures available. The median average lifespan of a porcelain veneer, with good oral care, is easily over 20 years. In fact, they can (and often do) last a lifetime. Like with most things, care and regular attention, practicing good oral hygiene, and routine dental visits will ensure your veneers remain in great shape.
CAN YOU WHITEN VENEERS?
Porcelain veneers cannot be whitened by teeth whitening gel. Patients are advised to whiten their teeth prior to getting dental veneers, so a proper shade/color can be perfectly matched to your natural teeth color. If you whiten after your veneers, your natural teeth and veneer may not match properly.
Questions about whitening and veneers are common since both are cosmetic procedures. The reality, however, is that many patients choose to get dental veneers for treatment in the first place because of severe discolorations that cannot be corrected by whitening alone. Porcelain veneers have a beautiful finish to them that will give a natural tooth appearance and cover any stain you’ve may want to see disappear.
