At Home Teeth Whitening vs. Professional Teeth Whitening

The desire for self-improvement peaks at the beginning of every year with resolution lists brimming with changes people wish to make, often including improving cosmetic oral care. Teeth whitening is a fast and easy way to improve overall appearance quickly and efficiently. Dentists typically offer two types of teeth whitening servicesat home teeth whitening and in office, professional teeth whitening.

At Home Teeth Whitening Services

Many professional dentists offer supplies, kits, and advice for at home teeth whitening in order to help clients improve the overall appearance of dental health. These products are similar to over the counter whitening products, but are often stronger in effectiveness. At home teeth whitening products may include, but are not limited to:

  • Whitening Toothpastes
  • Teeth Whitening Mouthrinses or Mouthwashes
  • Teeth Whitening Strips / Polyethylene Strips
  • Hydrogen Peroxide Whitening Gel
  • Teeth Bleaching Kits

Dentists may offer effective at home whitening products to patients to help diminish signs of staining and discoloration, which occur from certain foods, beverages, and habits of which people may be accustomed. At home whitening remedies may help to reduce discoloration and whiten teeth, but the results do not compare to the drastic results of in-office whitening.

Professional Dentist Teeth Whitening Services

Many professional dentists offer a variety of teeth whitening services. Although these solutions are more expensive than at home treatments, the results are more drastic and longer lasting. Most often, in office teeth whitening processes include gels that are administered and monitored by the dentist to ensure proper application. The gums and tissue of the mouth are often protected while a laser or light source helps the gel penetrate the layers of enamel of the tooth. The whitening gel then removes the surface discoloration as well as deep stains within the enamel layers.

In office teeth whitening session often take between 30 minutes to 1 hour. Multiple sessions may be suggested or required, depending on the optimum results desired. Professional teeth whitening procedures have long lasting results and are well worth the expense to satisfied patients.
