Tooth extraction is rarely something people look forward to, but when wisdom teeth cause pain or complications, removal may be necessary. Many Americans undergo wisdom tooth extractions due to issues such as impaction, overcrowding, or difficulty cleaning these hard-to-reach molars, which can increase the risk of infections and decay.
According to the Smithsonian Institution, human jaws were once much larger to accommodate a diet rich in tough, fibrous foods. Over time, as diets evolved, jaw sizes decreased, leaving less room for wisdom teeth to emerge properly. These third molars begin developing between ages 7 and 10 and typically erupt between ages 17 and 21, though for some, the process may continue until around 25, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.
While the eruption of wisdom teeth can be uncomfortable, symptoms are often manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers and saltwater rinses, as noted by Colgate. However, persistent pain, swollen gums, difficulty chewing, frequent headaches, jaw stiffness, or accidental biting of the tongue or cheeks due to bite misalignment may indicate a need for evaluation. In some cases, wisdom teeth can contribute to overcrowding, damage to adjacent teeth, or periodontal infections due to cleaning challenges.
At Studio Dental Care, our team is equipped to make the extraction and recovery process as smooth as possible. We have a maxillofacial surgeon and anesthesiologist on staff and offer a full range of anesthetic options, including topical solutions, local injections, nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and IV sedation, tailored to each patient’s needs.
Following extraction, a gauze pad will be provided to help control bleeding as a clot forms, and patients are advised to use cold packs intermittently for the first 24 hours to reduce swelling. A prescription for pain management may be provided, along with post-care instructions. For the first few days, it is important to avoid solid, spicy, or alcoholic foods that could irritate the wound. Staying hydrated is key, but avoid using straws or spitting forcefully, as these actions can dislodge the clot. Soft foods like yogurt, applesauce, ice cream, and soups are recommended during the initial healing period before gradually returning to a normal diet.
