The purpose of dental implants is to replace missing teeth and to increase the integrity of the jawbone.

Why replace missing teeth?

One main reason to replace missing teeth is because, without them, the jawbone resorbs—meaning it shrinks because it is not being used. Putting a tooth in the jawbone helps to maintain bone density.

Dental implants are also necessary when a front tooth is missing because implants look more natural than a partial. In addition, sometimes there is nothing more permanent than an implant; for example, a temporary flipper bridge/tooth. Partials do not look as natural as implants since the anatomy of the implant is more realistic.

The implant process contains many stages. In rare, complicated cases, a sinus lift and/or bone graft may be necessary to prepare for the implant procedure. The dental post is put into the bone—this post has a temporary cap on top. Once it heals, an x-ray is taken, and once the x-ray demonstrates that the post is securely in the jaw, the patient is fitted for a crown to go on the post. The temporary cap is put back on until the crown is ready to be placed over the post. Finally, the crown is secured to the post.
