What Makes a Toothpaste ADA Approved?

For parents, family, and consumers in general, people want affirmation regarding the products they purchase and on which they rely. Toothpaste is a perfect example. Between dentist recommendations and personal preferences, consumers want to use the best products for the most cost affordability. Often times, the best toothpastes on the market are American Dental Association approved and stamped with the official ADA seal.

The ADA is an organization established to provide and ensure that all tested dental products are held up to a certain standard prior to mass consumer sale and use. As an unbiased third party, the ADA provides feedback and testing, marking approved products with the seal of safety and effectiveness. Toothpaste, also sometimes referred to as dentifrice, helps to aid brushing during the daily routine of cleaning. People should brush twice a day with toothpaste, using floss and mouthrinse regularly to help prevent periodontal diseases and tooth decay. Beneficial toothpastes help to remove plaque, bacterium that clings to the surface of teeth, by using a minor abrasive material to aid in cleaning and polishing the teeth. All ADA approved toothpastes contain the ingredient, fluoride, a cavity fighting agent that protects healthy enamel. By cleaning teeth regularly and attending the dentist twice annually, patients help to ensure the healthiest possible oral hygiene.

The ADA seal of approval suggests adequate testing and a safe product, but not all toothpastes carry the familiar seal. Toothpastes produced for the public market must be held to a certain standard even before public consumption. Some toothpastes have a dentist’s approval or recommendation, which similar to the ADA’s seal, suggests safety and quality when regarding oral products.
